MISSOURI’S BEST MEAT PRODUCTS WERE SELECTED

The quality of meat products produced by Western’s Smokehouse of Greentop, Missouri was recognized at the Missouri Association of Meat Processors’ 77th annual convention and trade show held at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, Columbia, MO, March 4-6, 2016. At this state wide Meat Product Competition held in conjunction with that meeting, Western’s Smokehouse received the following product award(s):

  • Grand Champion Smoked Boneless Chicken Breast
  • Grand Champion Smoked Turkey
  • Reserve Grand Champion Boneless Ham
  • Champion Ring Bologna
  • Champion Dried Beef
  • Reserve Champion Sweet & Sassy Meat Snack Stick
  • Reserve Champion Smoked Sausage Link

Western’s Smokehouse was awarded a trophy for Best of Poultry Product for their Smoked Turkey.

Leighton Western won first place in the collegiate category. Leighton is an Ag Business Student at Missouri State University in Columbia, Missouri. Leighton will graduate on May 13, 2016, and plans to return to Western’s Smokehouse to work full time.

The competition - the only Missouri state contest of its kind, selected the finest example of cured and smoked specialty items from over 200 products entered into 20 different classes including hams, bacon, sausages, ring bologna, jerky snack sticks, smoked turkey and luncheon meats.

In addition to the Meat Products Competition one of the highlights of this convention was an 80 booth Trade Show featuring the latest meat processing equipment, supplies, and services.

Sam Western was honored with the MAMP’s Outstanding Service Award. This honor was bestowed to him at the Friday night banquet, and he received a standing ovation. Sam has been attending the MAMP convention since 1979. He served as president of MAMP in 1990, and was inducted into the MAMP Hall of Fame in 1999. He was inducted into the American Association of Meat Processors’ Hall of Fame in 2010. Sam continues to be an active member of both associations and credits both associations for being a positive influence in the growth of Western’s Smokehouse.

The Missouri Association of Meat Processors was founded 1939. Currently, it represents over 120 small and medium size meat processing operations. MAMP’s objectives are to assist the small meat plants to produce safe products, and to help them create “niche” markets that enable them to provide services that meet the needs of the consumer.
