History

1900s

James Everett Western, operated a butcher shop in the coal mining town of Connelsville, Missouri

1930-1970s

Glen Western, son of James Everett Western, butchered and peddled hogs in the small community of Greentop, Missouri and surrounding area.

1974

Sam Western, son of Glen Western, became the youngest manager of a large meat retail chain in Kirksville, Missouri

1978

Sam & Amy Western designed and constructed the original building which is where the Western's Smokehouse retail store is located today. The business was originally a custom butcher shop.

1982

Over the years the business continued to expand. In addition to butchering, the retail store, and deer processing, they began to offer catering and nation-wide shipping.

1990

Sam Western was elected President of the Missouri Association of Meat Processors. The business added a 1,000 sq ft expansion.

1992

Kevin Western, son of Sam & Amy Western, started working at the family business full time.

1999

Sam Western was inducted into the Missouri Assocation of Meat Processors Hall of Fame.

2000

Sam & Kevin Western were featured on the cover of Missouri Ruralist. The Western's logo with the yellow banner was introduced.

2003

Western's Smokehouse redirected the focus of their business to developing a shelf stable snack stick. The Western's logo featuring three cowboys was introduced.

2005

Kevin Western was elected President of the Missouri Assocation of Meat Processors and was awarded the American Association of Meat Processors Accomplishment Award in Buffalo, NY.

2007

Western's Smokehouse earned four awards at IFFA in Frankfurt, Germany from the German Butcher's Association.

2008

Western's ceased custom butchering and deer processing to pave the way for more production capabilities.

2010

Sam Western won the American Cured Meat Hall of Fame Award.

2014

Kevin Western became President of the American Association of Meat Processors.

2015

Kevin Western was inducted into the Missouri Association of Meat Processors Hall of Fame. Production moved into a new facility at 1978 Western Drive in Greentop, MO.

February 2016

Western's Smokehouse earned five awards at IFFA in Frankfurt, Germany from the German Butcher's Association. Western's earned Worldwide GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) and SQF (Safe Quality Food) Certification.

August 2016

Western's Smokehouse was featured as Independent Processor of the Year and was the cover story of the magazine.
